  • Dan farmed the Stauss family farm at Donges Bay road and Swan road after his father Melvin's death. Dan grew the best tasting sweet corn in the area and sold his corn at various farmers markets in the area. He also farmed soybeans and field corn. Dan enjoyed a good round of golf with family and friends.

  • A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grafton for retired Grafton businessman Erwin A. Stern, 71, who died Jan. 19, 2001. Fr. Michael Barrett officiated at the ceremony. Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton assisted the family with arrangements.

    Mr. Stern was born March 6 1929, in Shorewood. He married Marion R. Mohr of Fond du Lac on May 30, 1963.

    Mr. Stern was a member of the family that operated IGA and Sentry food stores in Grafton for over 60 years. The stores were noted for their pioneering use of advancing technology in the grocery business.

    He received a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in1953 in chemistry from Marguette University. Mr. Stern joined the staff and taught chemistry for two years before joining his parents in the family grocery business. After his marriage, his wife, and later his children, joined the business and they worked until their retirement in 1993.

    He devoted a great deal to the Village of Grafton. He joined the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department in 1953 and rose to the rank of first assistant chief before his retirement from the department in 1980. Mr. Stern also served as a member of the Grafton Plan Commission and AppeaIs Board, where he was instrumental in the planning and development of the Grafton park system including, Lime Kiln Park.

    In addition, Mr. Stern was a member of the Grafton Water and Wastewater Commission for 13 years, serving as president for the last 11 years. He was a member of Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association and served on various Governor's commissions for state development. Mr. Stern also served on the Parish Council at St. Joseph's Church in Grafton.

    After his retirement, Mr. Stern focused his energies on genealogy research. He served as first vice president of the Milwaukee County Genealogical Society where, among other things, he was responsible for the development and implementation of the society's speaker program.

    Survivors include: sons James (Margaret) of Grafton and Brian (Amy) of Rochester Minn; daughters Carla of Chicago and Julie (Patrick) Jankowski of Grafton; granddaughters Ashley, Heather and Leanna; brothers Joseph (Betty) Stern of Cedarburg and Lou (Louise) Stern of Farmington Hills, Mich; sisters Alice Dickmann of Grafton and Marilyn (James) Gardener of Bloomington, Ind; sisters-in-law Helen Swantz and Jeanette Burnett and brother-in-law David (Lori) Mohr, all of Fond du Lac.

    He was preceded in death by his wife Marion, his parents Peter and Marie Stern of Grafton and his parents-in-law Carl and Hazel Mohr of Fond du Lac, his brothers-in-law Jerome Dickmann, Howard Burnett and Addison Swantz. 20 JAN 2001
