• A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grafton for retired Grafton businessman Erwin A. Stern, 71, who died Jan. 19, 2001. Fr. Michael Barrett officiated at the ceremony. Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton assisted the family with arrangements.
  
  Mr. Stern was born March 6 1929, in Shorewood. He married Marion R. Mohr of Fond du Lac on May 30, 1963.
  
  Mr. Stern was a member of the family that operated IGA and Sentry food stores in Grafton for over 60 years. The stores were noted for their pioneering use of advancing technology in the grocery business.
  
  He received a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in1953 in chemistry from Marguette University. Mr. Stern joined the staff and taught chemistry for two years before joining his parents in the family grocery business. After his marriage, his wife, and later his children, joined the business and they worked until their retirement in 1993.
  
  He devoted a great deal to the Village of Grafton. He joined the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department in 1953 and rose to the rank of first assistant chief before his retirement from the department in 1980. Mr. Stern also served as a member of the Grafton Plan Commission and AppeaIs Board, where he was instrumental in the planning and development of the Grafton park system including, Lime Kiln Park.
  
  In addition, Mr. Stern was a member of the Grafton Water and Wastewater Commission for 13 years, serving as president for the last 11 years. He was a member of Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association and served on various Governor's commissions for state development. Mr. Stern also served on the Parish Council at St. Joseph's Church in Grafton.
  
  After his retirement, Mr. Stern focused his energies on genealogy research. He served as first vice president of the Milwaukee County Genealogical Society where, among other things, he was responsible for the development and implementation of the society's speaker program.
  
  Survivors include: sons James (Margaret) of Grafton and Brian (Amy) of Rochester Minn; daughters Carla of Chicago and Julie (Patrick) Jankowski of Grafton; granddaughters Ashley, Heather and Leanna; brothers Joseph (Betty) Stern of Cedarburg and Lou (Louise) Stern of Farmington Hills, Mich; sisters Alice Dickmann of Grafton and Marilyn (James) Gardener of Bloomington, Ind; sisters-in-law Helen Swantz and Jeanette Burnett and brother-in-law David (Lori) Mohr, all of Fond du Lac.
  
  He was preceded in death by his wife Marion, his parents Peter and Marie Stern of Grafton and his parents-in-law Carl and Hazel Mohr of Fond du Lac, his brothers-in-law Jerome Dickmann, Howard Burnett and Addison Swantz. 20 JAN 2001

• Peter and Marie where married at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church by Monsignor Peter Holfseltz who was born on the eight of September of 1856 in the same small village in Luxemburg (Remerschen, population 500) as Peter's materinal Grandmother, Marie Mallinger. Peter had been seperated from active duty with the U.S. Navy the month before the marriage. Marie was working as a seanstress. Marie's sister Teresa and Peter's cousin, William Stern were the the offical witnesses of the marriage.
  After the marriage, Peter and Marie went to Chicago, where they opened a
  delicatesen. Their son, Joseph, was born in Chicago, Cook County.
  In 1922 they returned to Wisconsin with the purchase of the Erhard Roller
  grocery store at 1644 Oakland Ave. in Shorewood (current numbering system, 4402 N. Oakland Ave.) In 1926 their store became one of the charter members of the Idependant Grocery Allanice, IGA. They lived in an apartment located above the store. Three of their children, Alice, Ralph and Erwin were born here. In 1930 the store was sold to Albert Becker. For a short time they lived in Milwaukee, where son Louis was born. In April of 1931 they moved to Grafton and opened another grocery store. Again the family lived in an apartment abpve the grocery store. It was while living here, that their last child, daughter

  Celia A. Mitchell, 89, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Kennewick, WA. She was born in York County, Nebraska on February 23, 1916 to Cyril A. and Lydia Anna (Guidinger) Sterner. Celia attended District 48 York County and graduated from York High School and the University of Nebraska with a BS in Education. She spent 12 years overseas traveling to 54 countries with husband Robert R. Mitchell and has resided in Kennewick since 1949. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at District 15 York County and Franklin High School, Franklin, NE.
  Surviving is her husband, Robert R. Mitchell of Kennewick; one son, Howard Mitchell and his wife Candy of Lemont, IL; one daughter, Ruth Mitchell of Kankakee, IL; two granddaughters, Sonyia Marr and Laura Mitchell. A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Kennewick on Tuesday, March 22, 2005. Graveside services will be held at the Lincoln Creek Cemetery near York, NE on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 11:00 am. No visitation. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church - Kids First, 421 W. Kennewick Ave., Kennewick, WA 99336.
